Gnosticism has a working nose for prisons. Archons. A world that feels administered. A maker who is not the highest office, and an exit that looks like knowledge rather than a sacrifice on an altar. I keep the nose. I do not keep the aftercare. A benevolent Monad that permits the downstairs is not a mystery. It is a press release. Putting the problem one story higher and calling that story Monad does not retire the problem. The downstairs is still administered. The upstairs has only been given a kinder brochure.
Here is where I parted with my own earlier draft, because the earlier draft talked like a man who was afraid of hierarchy. "There is a higher class" is not always a lie told to inmates. Sometimes there is a higher build. The Earth Adam is my name for one: a superior local making, a mark put on a creature that already walked, not the invention of life and not a patent on the biosphere. The breakaway file is another: a classified technical culture, privatized, ahead on some clocks. A family line is another, smaller and closer: uneven gifts that a school did not issue and cannot honestly deny. Nature is lumpy. I believe that. The blank-slate sermon, everybody the same clay and the classroom does the rest, is a useful quieting story. It is not a description I trust.
What I still refuse is the kind floor. Source, Pleroma, Galactic Federation, a loving administrator behind the administrator. Those function as comfort. They tell you the jail has a gentle owner if you can get the paperwork right. The old systems were precise about the furniture, which is why they are useful. A demiurge makes a world and is not the absolute. Archons staff the making. A pleroma is the fullness those administrators are supposedly cut off from. I can use the furniture as a map of offices. I do not need the furniture to love me. The generated-interface study is the modern rhyme: a lesser render, a developer who is an office rather than a sky-father, systems instead of a people I am invited to hate. A render does not earn a kind Monad. A glitch does not prove a gentle floor waiting above the glitch. A real difference in gift does not require that gentle floor either. Better and worse fits can exist on one story.
The ancestor patches are older than the film, and the film cops to them. William Irwin's collection, The Matrix and Philosophy, stages Plato's cave, Descartes' demon, Nozick's experience machine, Baudrillard's copies. Neo reaches into a hollowed book and the camera finds Simulations and Simulacra. Useful. The cave says the prisoners mistake shadows for the stock. It does not say the man who climbs out has met someone who loves him. The demon says the senses can be authored. It does not say the author is good, or that a kinder author sits behind the author. Nozick's machine says a life you would plug into is still a life you can refuse. Refusal is an ethic among whoever is actually in the room.
First-awake is luck of sequence, not a halo. Human-shaped God is the least likely sketch of whatever is oldest. If something sits at the root it may be foreign, early, and morally untranslated. Priority is not right. The first process to lock a rule in is not thereby the just process. Infrastructure is what matters if anything in the stack matters: energy, records, the ability to edit the floor later arrivals are standing on. The Elohim study is the Hebrew version of a company of powers, a national deity inside the company, a material tzelem, and a verse in which the ones called Elohim die like Adam. A government with a long life. The Earth Adam study is the workshop, and the flood that may have ended a high culture. A workshop is not an escape hatch. It is also not a license to merge every pantheon's officer into one passport.
People will want to call the breakaway the archons. I understand the want. A special-access program can hold a future hostage without becoming a metaphysical species, and a higher technical class can be real without being a demonology. Divinity is sometimes just the speech act that means stop auditing me. Nothing in the stack is immune to dying, as far as I can tell. There is no required cosmic enemy installed so a Monad can look clean. Craft, if I have any, stays local. Attention, a ritual, a route, a joke, a game. I can practice those without invoicing the universe for a result. The universe does not owe us a king who loves us. It also does not owe us a flat floor where nobody is built different. Both of those are comforts. I am trying to live without them, on the floor I actually have, with the line I actually got. I am not done looking.
Still looking. Not the last word.
