The science of Resident Evil

Resident Evil is not a lab manual. It is a warning cartoon about what happens when private labs, militaries, and vanity science treat living tissue as a platform. The public science underneath the cartoon is not a cartoon. I like the game. I also like the filing cabinet. Both can sit on an alternative-media desk without one of them having to dress up as the other.
Nanotech and gene therapy sit in the same drawer as virology. Delivery vehicles, lipid nanoparticles, viral vectors, in-vivo editing. The parts list is published. Dual-use is the adult word. Gain-of-function research is not a conspiracy brand. It is a funding category with oversight fights attached. An outbreak fiction becomes operationally interesting the moment you admit that the same toolkit that writes a therapy can write a payload. That does not mean Umbrella has a campus in Raccoon City. It means the bottleneck is not "we do not know how." The bottleneck is review boards, criminal code, insurance, and the remaining stigma. A fence is a decision. It is not a force of physics.
Watch the acceptance curve on anti-aging, because it is the same curve as every other upgrade. A cream is a cosmetic. A peptide clinic is a wellness brand. A senolytic trial is medicine. A gene therapy that lengthens healthspan is still called controversial. A neural lace for the healthy is still called a bridge too far, until it is a veteran benefit or a billionaire's Tuesday. The people who will get the early version are not a random sample. Money, talent, and institutional favor pick the line. I do not think that is a scandal hiding inside the science. I think it is how inheritance and power already work, applied to a new tool. Pretending the tool will arrive as an equal portion is the blank-slate hope wearing a lab coat.
The historical rhyme is not the game, and I will not smuggle Umbrella in as a declassified seal. Camp Detrick wanting a Reich biological-weapons deputy in the room is a staffing fact in the unelected laboratory. Paperclip hired. The desire to keep a gifted and compromised man because the gift was real is the rhyme. Nature of the aptitude, nurture of the uniform, a moral brochure that arrives after the contract. Asilomar and the later gene-editing fights, including the He Jiankui case, are the modern version of the fence arguing with the workshop. I want the fence. I do not want anyone confusing the fence with a law of nature.
The moment a jurisdiction decides longevity, organ shortage, or force-design outranks the fence, the Resident Evil premise stops being a costume. It becomes a budget line. I am not prophesying a raccoon city. I am saying the cartoon was early, not illiterate. Play the game. Read the patents. Notice who is allowed to hold the syringe. If you have a better source than I do, bring it. I am not the ethics board.
Still looking. Not the last word.
